San Miguel's History

San Miguel de Allende Located in the eastern part of Guanajuato in Mexico's mountainous region. San Miguel de Allende, previously known as (San Miguel el Grande serves as the administrative seat for the surrounding municipality of Allende, Guanajuato.

Founded in 1542 by Fray Juan de San Miguel, it used to be an important stop over on the Antiguo Camino Real, part of the silver route from Zacatecas.

San Miguel de Allende played a very important part in the history of Mexican Independence. It was here that General Ignacio Allende one of San Miguel's native sons joined the army as Padre Miguel Hidalgo's chief lieutenant in the war against Spain for independence. Unfortunately, General Allende was not able to live in an independent Mexico. He was captured during a battle and beheaded in 1811. Allende became a national hero and San Miguel el Grande renamed itself "San Miguel de Allende" in 1826 in honor of his actions.
